Beginning in 2016, we will be opening the tool library on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 PM, in addition to the current weekend hours. We want to improve the availability of our collection by adding weekday open hours.
We will also begin to charge late fees for those who do not bring tools back on time. We have too many tools staying out past their due dates. Fines will be 50 cents per day per tool up to the cost of the tools. If you cannot bring your tools back on time, you must let us know by email at [email protected] and we will renew the tool if no-one wants it. If you keep the tool(s) out and don’t let us know, fines will be due for the overdue period.
First Intro to Woodworking Class proves very popular
Our first woodworking classes in the Vashon High School woodshop were very well attended. In fact, so many wanted to attend that we had to add a second session on Thursdays. And there have been requests for additional classes in the same facility over the summer. Here are some photos from the Thursday class on the last day. Keep an eye open for the new classes we’ll be setting up in the near future.

Yard Art by Steve Wootton Using the tool library
Some yard art I created at the beginning of the summer. I used a draw knife from the library to clean the uprights (which were obtained from the Vashon Forest Stewards) and a large diameter skill saw – also from the library – to cut the poles to length. You might be interested to know that the ‘bell’ is the original crash guard for the gas pumps that used to be at the Dockton Store.
Tool Library Drill Team at Strawberry Festival 2017
Tool Library to be closed for Strawberry Festival Saturday
As in previous years, the Vashon Tool Library will be closed on Saturday, July 22nd for the Strawberry Festival. Because of the parade, the road is closed most of the morning. We will be open regular hours on Sunday from 2 to 5 PM.
Summer Tool Sale coming up July 15-6
Your Vashon Tool Library will be holding a tool sale the weekend of July 15-16 at the Penny Farcy Building across from the Fire Station. The sale will be open from 9 AM to 3 PM both days. On sale will be a huge variety of hand and electric tools, some donated and others surplused from our collection. Prices will be very reasonable. Proceeds will benefit the library and help us keep the library going – to buy specialized tools and support our repair and maintenance efforts. So come by and see what’s on sale.
Save the date for next Fixit Café
Start gathering up those broken thingies: the next Vashon Fix-It Cafe is scheduled for June 24, at the Penny Farcy Building on Bank Road. Let them know what they’re bringing in beforehand so they can make sure they have the people, tools and parts to take care of business. For more info, check out Vashon Fix It. Read more
